JORDAN, Guimaras – Stakeholders and local officials inthe island province signed a covenant condemning illegal drugs.
The pact manifests Guimarasnons’ participation in the nationwide campaign against the menace, said Superintendent Alberto Pabalan, Guimaras Police Provincial Office (GPPO)deputy director for administration.
“Our signatures signify our commitment and responsibility,” Pabalan said.
He enjoined stakeholders to support the antidrug campaign.
The campaign’s success depends not only on law enforcers but also on comprehensive and collective efforts of all stakeholders, said Pabalan.
Proactive and sustainable rehabilitation programs for drug dependents, he said, will help eventually make Guimaras drug-free.
If the problem is left unresolved, “it will ruin the life of the future generation,” he stressed.
Citing a decrease in crime volume, Pabalan said the GPPO and the provincial government’s antidrug programs seem effective.
“I’m happy to report to you that there’s a significant decrease in our crime volume,” he said,“so it simply shows the crimes happening in our provinceare most likely related to drugs.”
The signing was held at a covered gym in Barangay San Miguel on Thursday.
Gov. Samuel Gumarin, on his part, urged Guimarasnons to do their share in making communities drug-free.
“The fight against drugs is not only confined to the local government unit and the police officers,” he said. “It needs the involvement of communities[and] religious and private sectors.” (PNA)
