KALIBO, Aklan – Ati-Atihan groups and beauty pageant contenders will lead the loud opening salvo of the “mother of Philippine festivals,” organizers said.
Locals and tourists were urged to join other merrymakers during the Tamboe Salvo on Oct. 21.
Tribal and Modern groups will bring to the streets their sadsad panaad performance to the beat of drums, according to the volunteers’ group Kalibo Sto. Niño Ati-Atihan Foundation, Inc. (Kasafi).
Kasafi chairman Albert Menez said the Ati-Atihan Festival opening salvo will be a “sneak peek” of the annual religious celebration.
Held in honor of Señor Santo Niño de Kalibo, the Ati-Atihan Festival’s 2017 edition will be from Jan. 6 to 15.
Around 1 p.m. on Oct. 21, around 40 Tribal and Modern groups will perform traditional street dancing and drum-beating from the Magsaysay Park to the Pastrana Park.
The sixteen finalists of the 2017 Mutya it Kalibo Ati-Atihan will make their first public appearance and the Ati-Atihan festival song will be launched during the opening salvo, Menez said.
Mayor William Lachica, Vice Mayor Madeline Regalado, and community and church leaders are expected to grace the Tamboe Salvo.
Plans to include the Miss Earth 2016 candidates in the opening salvo are under way, the organizers said.
