MANILA – The Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) polls have been postponed from Oct. 31 this year to October 2017.
Malacañang on Oct. 18 announced that President Rodrigo Duterte signed the bill that would allow the full implementation of necessary reforms in the political system.
“According to Executive Secretary (Salvador) Medialdea, it was already signed by the President but he would have to wait for the aircraft that would bring home the signed law and for proper transmittal to the proper offices,” said assistant secretary Marie Banaag of the Presidential Communications Office.
Banaag also failed to confirm if the law was signed before or after Duterte left for Brunei.
Duterte previously said he is in favor of the barangay and SK postponement bill, saying that drug money will be used for the electoral process.
Proponents of the measure said the new law will allow the Commission on Elections to improve the voter turnout for barangay and SK elections.
It would also allow the President to appoint new officials and fill up vacancies in the bureaucracy./PN
