ILOILO City – The Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) in Western Visayas is encouraging local chief executives to speed up lot donations so that funds could be allocated for the construction of additional jail facilities.
BJMP-6 regional chief of staff Gilbert Peremne said 16 district jails in the region are “405 percent” congested.
One of the main requirements for the national government to provide fund for the construction of jails is a lot donation from local government units (LGUs).
Peremne said this November they will submit a list of LGUs with lot donations to their central office. If they could not submit, then they have to wait for another year to get an allocation.
“We are appealing to local chief executives, especially those who have problems on jail congestion, to help the BJMP,” he added.
Antique governor Rhodora Cadiao approved the donation of a one-hectare lot in Bugasong, Antique for the establishment of the Antique District Jail. Iloilo City’s Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog also committed to donate a one-hectare lot in Barangay Lanit, Jaro district.
This week, BJMP will be sending lettings to local chief executives whose jurisdictions cover areas already identified as strategic locations for construction of jail facilities in the region.
According to Peremne, the top three jails in the region with the highest congestion rate were the Iloilo District Jail – Male Dormitory in Barangay Nanga, Pototan, Iloilo; the female dormitory in Iloilo City; and the Aklan District Jail. (PNA)
