MANILA – Sen. Antonio “Sonny” Trillanes IV is seeking to investigate the death of anti-crime advocate Zenaida Luz, who was allegedly killed by members of the Philippine National Police (PNP).
Trillanes’ Senate Resolution No. 201 pointed out that 2,294 of the 3,844 reported deaths at the start of President Duterte’s presidency are vigilante-style killings. Others were killed during police operations.
Trillanes said the figure is “very alarming.”
These killings warrant an investigation to establish “remedial legislation” and to ensure that police officers do not use their authority, training and power in committing unlawful and criminal activities, the senator said.
“We should also revisit the Philippine National Reform Act to ensure that the PNP’s constitutionally enshrined mandate to ‘serve and protect’ would be upheld,” he added.
In his resolution, Trillanes said that Luz, regional chairperson of the Citizen Crime Watch, was gunned down by riding in tandem suspects identified as Senior Inspector Magdalino Pimentel Jr. and Inspector Markson Almeranez.
It also cited an article of British national daily newspaper The Guardian dated Oct. 4 that featured a high-ranking police official who revealed he is a part of the 10 newly-formed and highly secretive special operations teams formed to execute suspected drug personalities and other criminals.
