MANILA – Global Football Club completed a rare championship double after capturing the 2016 United Football League crown for having the best record at the end of the double-round robin tournament on Sunday at the Rizal Memorial Football Stadium.
Global, which also captured the UFL Cup crown earlier this year, finished its campaign with 47 points on a 15-2-2 win-loss-draw record. The team also secured a slot to the 2017 Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Cup.
“The great thing is, we secured the championship. That was our goal and our target,” said Global head coach John Burridge. “I want to make this club famous outside of the Philippines or Southeast Asia. We have to put this club in the public eye.”
“The work (for AFC Cup) now starts. We have to work on recruitment because I have been in the Asian Champions League and believe me, we need five or more marquee players that can play against those Western Asian players,” he added.
Meanwhile, JP Voltes Football Club leaned on the first half conversion of Alen Angeles to escape to a 1-0 victory over dethroned champion Ceres-La Salle Football Club of Bacolod City.
JP Voltes took advantage of the off-target Ceres-La Salle, which was decimated by the expulsion of Philippine Azkals mainstays Stephan Schrock and Manuel Ott through straight red cards, to escape with the win.
With JP Voltes’ upset victory, it created a three-way tie for second place in the standings, joining Ceres-La Salle and the Loyola Meralco Sparks Football Club with 41 points each.
However, Ceres-La Salle still took home the second place trophy by virtue of a higher quotient. The Bacolod City-based squad also earned a playoff slot to the 2017 AFC Cup./PN
