MANILA – The Pocari Sweat Lady Warriors cruised to its sixth straight win in the Shakey’s V-League Season 13 Reinforced Conference with a 25-16, 25-23, 22-25, 25-14 victory over the University of Santo Tomas Tigresses on Wednesday at Philsports Arena in Pasig City.
American reinforcement Breana Mackie led the way with a conference high 27 points, on 22 attacks, four blocks and a service ace, for the Lady Warriors, which moved up to solo first place with a 6-1 win-loss slate.
Myla Pablo chipped in 16 markers, including 12 attacks, while Andrea Kacsits and Michelle Gumabao combined 16 markers for the Lady Warriors, which will face the Golden Tigresses in the best-of-three semifinals.
“As expected naman from the start na UST kahit lamangan mo ng malaki lalaban ng lalaban ‘yan,” said Lady Warriors head coach Rommel Abella. “Mabuti na lang naka-recover kami sa dulo.”
After a lopsided first set victory, the Lady Warriors seemed headed for another easy second set win after building a 16-9 lead. But the Golden Tigresses refused to give up as it rallied to tie the count at 20-all.
The Lady Warriors, behind Mackie, Pablo and Gumabao, pulled up to within 24-21 in the third frame but the Golden Tigresses made its last push at 24-23. However, a powerful hit by Mackie ended the set.
With the momentum on their side, the Golden Tigresses was able to steal the third set but the Lady Warriors quickly responded in the fourth frame as it built a 24-13 lead to clinch the win.
Ennajie Laure top-scored with 18 points, while Cherry Rondina and Marivic Meneses added 10 markers apiece for the Golden Tigresses, which played without key player Carla Sandoval due to an injury./PN
