BACOLOD City – Negros Occidental governor Alfredo Marañon Jr. discouraged the public from wearing black if they attend the program on Cinco de Noviembre.
A campaign to wear or display anything black to support the retention of Negros Island Region on Nov. 5 was launched on social media.
Provincial Planning and Development Officer Ma. Lina Sanogal earlier said they were expecting “thousands” to join the commemoration. Wearing black, she said, will show their support for Region 18.
But according to the governor, wearing or displaying anything black “will lead to nothing positive.”
“Our [campaign] should be proactive,” he said in a radio interview on Thursday. “The administration may interpret such action as a challenge to them.”
Marañon encouraged everyone to pray.
“What we would want to do is pray that President Rodrigo Duterte be enlightened that retaining our region is beneficial,” he said./PN
