ILOILO – All local government units (LGUs) in the province were urged to oppose the use of firecrackers.
Their campaign should focus on children, who are considered more prone to the dangers of using firecrackers, said Marefie Huervana, an official on noncommunicable diseases at the Provincial Health Office (PHO).
Cases of firecracker injuries in 2015 decreased “tremendously” because of the Health department’s Iwas Paputok campaign “Aksyon: Paputok Injury Reduction,” she said.
Meanwhile PHO chief Patricia Grace Trabado said they will release advocacy materials featuring photos of physical injuries caused by firecrackers as part of a “scare campaign.”
Trabado hopes no more Ilonggo, especially children, uses firecrackers this year.
They could use other means to make noise to celebrate the New Year, she said.
“We are really encouraging all to follow Davao City, where no more people are using firecrackers,” said Trabado.
Trabado said they also plan to urge the Sangguniang Panlalawigan to pass an ordinance banning firecrackers. (PNA)
