MANILA – Ariana Dormitorio bested her rival to rule the women’s division of the Asian qualifying leg of the 2017 World Mountain Bike Championship at the Nuvali Dirt Weekend in Santa Rosa, Laguna.
The Iloilo City native, who recently won the overall championship in the 2016 Asian Mountain Bike Series in Malaysia, used the familiarity with the route to her advantage to finish in 5 hours, 16 minutes and 12 seconds.
Behind the 19-year-old Dormitorio in the 90-kilometer course were fellow Filipinas Melissa Jaroda and Avegail Rombaon, who submitted 5:16.45 and 5:19.45, respectively.
“The race was extra challenging kasi umulan kaya maya-maya lang nasa tabi mo na iyong mga kalaban mo,” Dormitorio told Panay News.
Meanwhile Motoshi Kadota of Japan topped the men’s division, clocking 4:06.17.
Finishing behind the 40-year-old Japanese were Filipinos Alvin Benosa and Eusebio Quiniones.
The top 40 finishers in the qualifying race scored points for their Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) Marathon Series ranking and will be eligible to join next year’s world championship race in Germany.
It was the eighth installment of the prestigious cycling event that gathered more than 1,500 cyclists representing different provinces and countries around the world, including Japan and Portugal.
Nuvali partnered for the second consecutive year with the UCI, the international governing body on sports cycling events, to host this year’s Asian qualifying leg of the 2017 Cross Country Marathon World Championship./PN
