MANILA – President Rodrigo “Rody” Duterte on Saturday night said he will soon issue an order telling drug personalities to stay indoors or they will be killed.
“In the coming days, I will make it a must, a mandate na lahat kayo na natamaan ng droga ‘wag kayong lumabas ng bahay. Wala man akong presuhan, pumasok kayo sa bahay ninyo, mag-lock kayo. Pagka lumabas kayo, p—ina nyo papatayin ko kayo, ‘pag nakita ko kayong lumabas,” Duterte said during the San Beda Law alumni homecoming at Bonifacio Global City in Taguig City as he announces how he plans to make the positive effects of his war on drugs permanent.
He made the statement after making a computation of how big is the illegal drugs industry in the country. From an estimate of P200 per day that three million addicts spend on drugs, he computed that the industry is worth at least P216 billion a year.
“Where do they get P200 to sustain their [addiction]? They rob, they kill, hold-up dito sa Manila. Medyo ngayon wala na, but that’s only… for the moment lang ‘yan, takot kasi eh. Wala na ang mga istambay… How do we make it permanent?” he said.
“Can we legislate [in] Congress, can we legislate fear, respect of the law? Wala. Hindi mo puwedeng tapik-tapikin ‘Kawawa naman ang Pilipino, huminto ka na,” he added.
Presidential spokesperson Ernesto Abella told GMA News Online on Sunday that Duterte’s statement was a warning against drug suspects.
“[Duterte] is reiterating the gravity of being involved in drugs, and warns of serious repercussions,” Abella said.
He said Duterte has yet to clarify if he will issue a curfew for drug suspects.
“The details will have to be worked out,” he said.
Duterte said in his speech that after careful validation with the help of all concerned law enforcement agencies, his administration has already finished validating a list of people in government, including mayors and barangay chairmen, policemen, members of the judiciary, who are involved in the illegal drugs.
He said that by the end of November, he will submit the report to the National Security Council, the Senate President and Speaker of the House of Representatives.
“Let us formulate [a plan] how to prevent a disaster for the next generation,” he said, insisting that more than terrorism, drugs is the most serious problem in the country. “Droga ang pinaka because it would leave us in its wake so many insane persons.”
He reiterated in his speech that before he became president, he was confident that he will be able to solve the country’s drug problem in several months time.
“So noong nanalo ako, I named already known personalities. But to my horror, after the so many names that I mentioned, the final report of the PDEA (Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency), from all sources collated, from the national intelligence community, NBI, lahat. Binigyan ako ng kopya ganun kakapal, sabi ko medyo problema ito… Tinawagan ko ang Cabinet sabi ko hindi ko ito kaya,” he said.
He added: “And even if assuming na sinasabi nila na pinapatay ko, sinasabi ko sa kanila I will run out of time and bullets because of this report.”
Duterte had made a campaign promise to end criminality and the drug problem in the country in just six months. He had recently asked for another six months to fulfill this promise. (GMA News)
