MANILA – Do not expect an apology from the House of Representatives for the way they handled the inquisition on Ronnie Dayan, former driver/bodyguard and lover of Sen. Leila de Lima, last week.
Deputy House Speaker Fredenil Castro (Capiz, 2nd District) said the lawmakers will not publicly apologize for their questions criticized as too personal and unnecessary. He said the public misinterpreted them.
“Walang dapat ihingi ng paumanhin ang Kamara sa publiko sapagkat hindi tama ang pananaw ng lahat ng bumabatikos sa naganap na pagdinig noong nakaraang linggo,” said Castro.
Castro stood by his way of questioning Dayan. He asserted it was his way of testing the credibility of the witness and such line of questioning is nothing new as it was also being used in courts.
“Naitanong ko na ang kanilang pagmamahalan ni Senadora de Lima ay hindi lamang pagmamahalan na base sa mababaw na damdamin kundi ito ay tunay na pagmamahalan at ito ay isang wagas, dalisay at tapat na pagmamahalan,” he said.
“I stand by my question,” he added. “Napaka-importante sa direksiyon na aking tinatahak at direksyon ng aking pagtatanong para maabot ko ang conclusion na kung itong si Dayan ay isang credible o maaaring paniwalaan na testigo o hindi.”
In a news conference on Monday, House Majority Floor Leader Rodolfo Fariñas echoed Castro’s statement. Digging deep on de Lima and Dayan’s affair will establish their links to the illegal drug trade, Fariñas stressed.
“Sa pagtatanong namin, gusto namin i-establish na mayroon silang illegal relationship kaya sinusunod ni Ronnie si Senator Leila (de Lima) kapag inuutusan siya na kumuha ng pera kay Kerwin,” said Fariñas.
“Kung hindi namin tatanungin ang mga bagay na iyan, hindi namin mai-establish na credible witness si Ronnie,” he added. “Contemptuous iyong where is the respect of Senator de Lima sa House.”
The House drew flak from netizens after focusing on de Lima and Dayan’s affair during an inquiry on Thursday last week supposedly on the drug trade at the New Bilibid Prison in Muntinlupa City.
Castro asked Dayan if, among others, he felt de Lima’s love for him was “wagas, tapat at dalisay (pure and honest).”
Fariñas, on the other hand, asked what the “highest signal” their affair reached after Dayan alluded to a typhoon signal./PN
