MANILA – Matthew Wright came alive in the final quarter as the Phoenix Fuel Masters scored a come-from-behind 94-90 win over the Meralco Bolts in the 2016-2017 Oppo PBA Philippine Cup on Wednesday night at the San Juan Arena.
Trailing by as much as 10 points, 75-65, at the end of the third frame, Wright spearheaded a huge run by the Fuel Masters in the final quarter to snatch the lead at 76-75.
After the Bolts reclaimed the edge at 79-76, Wright came up with three straight conversions to tie the game at 84-all. Cyrus Baguio then joined the fray with a triple for a 91-90 edge before Wright sealed the win with free throws.
Wright top-scored with a career-high 22 points, with 14 coming in the final quarter, for the Fuel Masters, which snapped its two-game losing skid to improve its win-loss record to 3-3.
Mark Borboran chipped in 17 markers, with 10 coming in the second half, while rookie Angelo Alolino and Baguio had 11 markers each for the Fuel Masters, which played without JC Intal, William Wilson and Doug Kramer.
The Fuel Masters started strong in the match to take an 18-10 lead on triples by Borboran, but the Bolts relied on Reynel Hugnatan and Clifford Hodge to come to within two points at halftime.
In the third frame, the Bolts got a huge lift from rookie Jonathan Grey as it built a double-digit advantage before losing its steam to the much more aggressive Fuel Masters in the final frame.
Grey finished with a career-high 21 points, while Negrense Reynel Hugnatan added 15 markers for the Bolts, which suffered its second straight defeat to slide down to 2-3, tying with the Barangay Ginebra San Miguel Kings./PN
