SAN JOSE, Antique – A remote and unadulterated barangay in a town in central Antique is brimming with tourism potentials, a local official said.
Yapu, Bugasong may be reached by walking for an hour and a half from Tagudtod North and crossing the big Paliwan River twice.
The village of only around 300 households is surrounded by a mountain with green trees and home to wild monkeys. Its riverbanks may be a good camping ground, while the village itself is ideal for horseback-riding.
Barangay Captain Arnie Lam-an said he is waiting for funding for a planned farm-to-market road from Sitio Anilawan up to the barangay proper.
A three-tiered waterfall in Sitio Upper Nabaya may be reached after a 20-minute trek through man-made rice terraces. This same waterfall produces the water that irrigates the nearby rice farms.
The Paliwan River, one of the seven major rivers in Antique, is also ideal for river kayaking.
What the barangay needs most, Lam-an said, are infrastructures that would make it more accessible to visitors.
A hanging bridge was built under an antipoverty program of the Department of Social Welfare and Development, but a series of typhoons destroyed it. “It needs immediate repair,” said the barangay captain.
Lam-an said the barangay council is preparing a proposal for possible convergence with the Department of Tourism and other national government agencies to facilitate tourism infrastructures. (PNA)
