KALIBO, Aklan – Firecracker blasts hurt 14 people in Aklan from Dec. 21 to Jan. 1, according to the Provincial Health Office (PHO).
All were outpatients at the Dr. Rafael S. Tumbokon Memorial Hospital, the provincial hospital, said the provincial health officer Dr. Cornelio Cuachon Jr. Most of them were injured during the New Year revelry.
Cuachon said they expect the cases to increase.
“Other government and private hospitals have yet to report,” he said. “They will continue monitoring the injuries until Jan. 5.”
In the same period in 2015, there were only 10 injuries.
This year, this capital town and New Washington had the most number of injuries with four each, followed by Banga with two. Among the injured, 13 were males.
Kwitis caused nine injuries, while triangle and the prohibited piccolo caused two injuries each. One case was caused by a Judas belt.
Ten of the injured were aged above 15 years old. They were wounded when firecrackers accidentally blew up in their hands.
Twelve had hand injuries, while the others were hurt on the eye and face, Cuachon said.
The youngest victim was a nine-year-old from Numancia, while the oldest was a 72-year-old from Kalibo.
No stray bullet injury and firecracker ingestion was reported. (Aklan Forum Journal/PN)
