MANILA – Sen. Richard “Dick” Gordon is pushing for a “closer relationship” between the government and the Filipino people in the fight against illegal drugs.
The war on drugs will even be more successful if the people are uniting to stop drugs and criminality, Gordon said.
“We can better apprehend and obtain convictions against perpetrators of vigilante killings, including rogue policemen and any criminal through the continuous participation of the people,” the chairman of the Senate Committee on Justice and Human Rights.
In the Senate committee report on the reported prevalence of extrajudicial killings (EJKs) in the country, Gordon encouraged Filipinos to be part of the process of change.
People, he said, must organize village watch groups to protect themselves against criminals, particularly drug dealers and pushers.
“The people themselves should be empowered to help transform their respective areas into ‘drug-free’” neighborhoods where their families may safely reside,” the report stated.
The former mayor of Olongapo City shared that the creation of the Barangay Anti-Natcotics Group in his hometown helped in the successful implementation of their anti-illegal drugs campaign.
“In the old days in Olongapo, I had the Barangay Anti-Narcotics Group who had kids in school and people in the community who helped me weed out drug pushers. We drove them away from Olongapo. It has been proven that when people participate, the effort will succeed,” Gordon added.
To fix the drug and EJK problem, the senator stressed that the people must “synergize” and “work together.”
“There is strength not just in numbers but also in consolidated efforts. The key is to maximize and harmonize these symbiotic endeavors to achieve optimum results,” he ended./PN
