ILOILO – Police were verifying reports that the Hungarian killed in Pavia town on New Year’s Day was a wanted man in his home country.

Superintendent Gilbert Gorero, spokesperson for the Police Regional Office 6, said they will work with Philippine intelligence units and the Hungarian police.

The 37-year-old Daniel Melczer was into the illegal drug business, stated an article on the English website Daily News Hungary, which cited related information from two Hungarian news sites.

“We could not really conclude if the reports are true until we can secure an arrest warrant. We will still coordinate with the Hungarian police,” said Gorero.

Melczer used to work at a petrol station in Buda (part of the capital Budapest) but somehow got into the drug business, the Daily News Hungary article stated.

“His case was investigated by the police in Érd, and then tried at the Budapest Court after the prosecution accusation. This happened in the September of 2013. That’s the year when Dániel disappeared [sic],” stated the article.

The Foreign Liaison Section of the Regional Intelligence Division will tap the Foreign Liaison Division of the Philippine National Police national command’s Directorate for Intelligence, which could connect it with the Hungarian police, said Gorero.

A 42-year-old seafarer, Lucindo Lim, shot Melczer after a confrontation around 1 a.m. on Jan. 1 in a residential subdivision in Barangay Balabag, Pavia.

Melczer, whose fiancée was an Ilongga, died of gunshot wounds on the forehead, right knee and left hand.

The foreigner did not like firecrackers exploding in his neighborhood.

Lim was setting off firecrackers in front of his house to welcome the New Year, but this upset Melczer, who was rudely awakened by the explosions.

Responding police officers recovered from the crime scene a .9mm pistol and seven empty shells, and a .45 handgun./PN
