ILOILO City – A gathering at the University of the Philippines – Visayas will encourage the youth, especially young leaders, to be active government partners in fighting illegal drugs.
Originally set on Thursday, the Youth Summit Against Illegal Drugs was moved to Wednesday next week, Jan. 18.
It is important to involve the youth in the antidrug campaign as they are “very susceptible” to illegal drugs, said Raul Anlocotan, assistant regional director of the National Economic and Development Authority.
The Police Advisory Council for Police Transportation and Development (PAC-PTD) is leading the summit in partnership with the Iloilo Police Provincial Office.
“There is also a need to collaborate with them, especially youth leaders, in ensuring that their colleagues and friends will not hold on to illegal drugs,” said Anlocotan, also the president of the PAC-PTD.
Anlocotan urged local chief executives in Iloilo to support the activity in response to President Rodrigo Duterte’s appeal for help in his administration’s “war” against drugs.
Mayors were advised to send 10 to 15 participants to the summit and shoulder their P350 registration fee and transportation expenses.
National Youth Commission chairperson Aiza Seguerra is one of the guest speakers.
Meanwhile New Lucena mayor Christian Sorongon, chairman of the PAC’s youth and sports committee, expects the Summit to bring awareness among the youth.
Sorongon hopes the participants will use whatever they learn from the Summit to influence their fellows in their schools and communities.
