MANILA – Senate President Aquilino Pimentel III issued an “urgent appeal” for emergency humanitarian assistance to flood victims in Cagayan de Oro.
Torrential rains on Monday caused severe flooding that affected “tens of hundreds” of locals and led to evacuations in 11 barangays, Pimentel said yesterday.
“[Cagayan de Oro] needs immediate support for the reconstruction of destroyed houses and other damaged buildings,” he said.
People displaced by flash floods need immediate food and clothing, as their houses were either washed away or still submerged in waist-deep floodwater, said Pimentel.
The senator likewise thanked those who already made donations in cash and in kind.
Meanwhile local officials said the heavy rainfall on Monday was similar to typhoon “Ondoy,” which caused flooding in metropolitan Manila and neighboring provinces in 2009.
“Heavy rainwater that cascaded from the mountains and valleys of Bukidnon rose quickly, creating flash floods that caught many by surprise, including city students who were stranded overnight,” said Pimentel, who is from Cagayan de Oro.
It is “high time” that the local government revisit its flood control and infrastructure programs, he stressed./PN
