ILOILO City – BRP Andres Bonifacio, the Philippine Navy’s newest ship, visited this city and opened its doors to the press.
The Iloilo tour of the ship Friday last week was in line with the Philippine Navy’s recruitment mission to boost its ranks.
According to the ship captain, Commander Brendo Casaclang, BRP Andres Bonifacio was formerly a US Coast Guard high endurance cutter.
It one of the two ships committed by then US President Barrack Omaba to give to the Philippines. The other one was a research vessel.
The Bonifacio arrived in the Philippines last Dec. 29, 2016 after a 26-day voyage from California, USA.
“The vessel has already established a very important connection when she served as training platform for the sailing crew of BRP Gregorio del Pilar,” said Casaclang.
It is also the third Hamilton-class US Coast Guard ship to join the Philippine fleet. Others were the BRP Gregorio Del Pilar and BRP Ramon Alcaraz.
Decommissioned by the US in early 2016, the frigate is armed with a 76-mm Oto-Melara auto-cannon and has a cruising speed of 29 knots./PN
