CEBU City – A recent rabid dog attack of around 24 residents prompted the veterinary office of Mandaue City, Cebu to hold a massive antirabies vaccination of cats and dogs in Barangay Casuntingan.
More than 100 of the residents’ pets have so far been injected with antirabies vaccine, said Dr. Nestor Taasan, Mandaue City veterinarian.
Stray dogs in Casuntingan that most likely came in contact and fought with the rabid dog named “Bruno” at the height of the latter’s aggression were rounded up for observation and to keep them from harming the locals.
Owned by a Barangay Casuntingan resident, Bruno had gone on a biting spree, attacking people who came in his way.
A chase by village officials, led by Casuntingan barangay captain Oscar del Castillo, led to the dog’s capture.
Bruno died a few hours later while inside a sack where he was kept by his captors for observation.
Results of an FA (fluorescent antibody) test on Bruno’s preserved head to identify specific microorganisms — released Wednesday last week — revealed that the dog was rabid.
Dr. Edna Seno, Mandaue City’s health chief, reminded the victims to make sure to get a complete antirabies treatment.
“Those bitten must come back for the next three sessions of the vaccination,” Seno stressed.
Otherwise, “they run the risk of having the virus spread throughout their body, which may cause death,” she said. “The vaccine will help their bodies fight the virus.” (PNA)
