BACOLOD City – The Sangguniang Panlungsod asked the local schools division superintendent and principals to help curb illegal drug use.
Schools may incorporate “anti-illegal drug education” into their curriculums or any educational session, according to Councilor Renecito Novero.
The Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002 mandated the integration of drug abuse prevention and control into the curriculums of primary, secondary and tertiary schools, Novero said in a resolution passed on Wednesday.
Moreover, the city government was tasked to initiate antidrug symposiums and dialogues with school authorities and students, he said, citing Department of the Interior and Local Government Memorandum Circular No. 2009-09.
Such activities shall “educate and promote awareness among [school stakeholders] regarding the harmful effects of [prohibited] substances.”
“The city recognizes the vital role of the youth in nation-building and adheres to the policy of the state to promote and protect their physical, moral, spiritual, intellectual, and social well-being,” the education committee chairman said.
Copies of the resolution were sent to Mayor Evelio Leonardia, the Department of Education (DepEd) secretary, the superintendent of the DepEd – Division of Bacolod City, the DepEd – Negros Island Region director, and the principals of all public elementary and high schools here./PN
