ILOILO City – Taking selfies – or groupfies – can be dangerous. Five students from Tubungan National High School and their teacher learned this lesson the hard way.
While taking photos of themselves using mobile phones on a hanging bridge in Barangay Dagaay, Tubungan, Iloilo on Saturday afternoon, the Grade 11 students and their teacher Dienille James Guerero, 27, accidental fell to the Har-aw River below.
They were slightly injured, according to Senior Inspector Ronald Araño, police chief of Tubungan.
The considerable volume of water at the Har-aw River cushioned their fall.
The bridge was some 15 feet high.
One of the students, a 17-year-old lass, was rushed to the Western Visayas Medical Center in Mandurriao, Iloilo City. She sustained the most severe injuries.
According to Arano, the students and their teacher attended the fiesta of Barangay Dagaay, Tubungan and decided to take photos of themselves on the hanging bridge that connected the village to Sitio Bunyogan, Barangay Cadabdab around 2:30 p.m.
A wooden post to which one end of the bridge’s cable was latched gave way, according to Araño.
The 17-year-old girl got entangled with the bridge’s cable.
“Nag sang-it ang liog sang estudyante sa kable, gin salô lang sang upod nila,” said Araño./PN
