ILOILO City – Waving the rainbow flag of diversity and acceptance, Team Gwapa stunned the rest of the competition to be crowned the champion of the 1st Iloilo LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender) Volleyball League on Sunday at the Brgy. Calumpang Covered Gym in Molo district.
Spearheaded by Iloilo City National High School volleyball trainer, coach Dax “Dakdak” Llige, the tourney started as a sports campaign for the LGBT community on social media before being noticed and supported by the Iloilo City Government and city sports coordinator Romel “Jojo” Castro.
“Thank you sa tanan nga nagbuylog sa atun momentous event (on Sunday). It will always be remembered kay that was our first strive para matigayun ang 1st Iloilo City LGBT League,” expressed coach “Dakdak” on Facebook. “Hope nga ara pa kmu tanan mabuylog sa atun Season 2 in April. Mark your calendar!”
Organizers of the event plan to make the Iloilo LGBT volleyball league a quarterly affair. Aside from the sporting showdown, team muses also paraded their beauty as upcoming Iloilo LGBT Ambassadresses of Goodwill. Team Gwapa muse Maui Tolentino was named a Season 1 Ambassadress.
The other competing teams were the Barotac Viejo Blaze Spikers; the Winn Club of Culasi, Antique; Team Arevalo; Team Leganes; Team San Joaquin; Team Medz; Team Monica; Team MK; and the Roxas City Volleyball Club.
The one-day volleyball tourney is part of Iloilo City’s Sports for All Program, highlighting that sports is for everybody, and in sports everyone is equal./PN
