MANILA – The AMA Online Education Titans leaned on the fourth quarter exploits of Jeron Teng to score a 69-61 win over the Jose Rizal University Heavy Bombers in the 2017 PBA D-League Aspirants Cup on Monday at the JCSGO Gym in Cubao, Quezon City.
Trailing by five points early in the final frame, Teng scored five straight points to surge the Titans ahead at 58-53. He also drained two crucial baskets in the last two minutes as the Titans built its largest lead at 69-60.
The former De La Salle University Green Archers star finished with 31 points to lead the way for the Titans, which snapped its two-game losing skid to improve to a 3-2 win-loss slate.
Gino Jumao-as added 12 markers, while Jay-R Taganas contributed double-double 10 points and 15 rebounds for the Titans, which is poised for its first-ever playoffs appearance this conference.
John Paolo Pontejos, meanwhile, was the lone bright spot with 19 points, including two three-point baskets, for the Heavy Bombers, which suffered its first defeat after a 2-0 start.
With the result, only the Racal Tile Masters Ceramica is the lone unblemished team in the league after registering its third straight victory at the expense of Team Batangas, 91-78, in the first game.
Sidney Onwubere led the way with 18 points, while Kent Salado and Jackson Corpuz added 17 and 14 markers, respectively, for Ceramica, which is composed mostly of players from the NCAA.
Ceramica struggled early in the opening frame until they regained control in the second quarter at 28-26 on a Corpuz basket. The lead then grew to 43-30 at halftime behind Salado, Rey Nambatac and Felix Apreku.
Ceramica continued its dominance in the second half to finally build its largest lead at 79-54 behind conversions by Onwubere, Thomas Torres, Allan Mangahas, and Roider Cabrera./PN
