BORACAY – Most of the more than 160,000 tourists who went here in January were foreigners.

They reached 95,069, according to data from the Economic Enterprise Development Department (EEDD), an extension of the Provincial Tourism Office in Barangay Caticlan, Malay.

Rounding out the 169,843 total tourists in January were 67,643 domestic tourists and 7,131 overseas Filipino workers.

Majority of the visiting foreigners were Chinese; they reached 34,743.

Koreans followed with 34,040; Taiwanese, 3,840; Russians, 2,414; and Americans, 2,039.

Included in the top 10 foreign visitors were Australians, 1,874; British, 1,545; Malaysians, 1,381; Saudi Arabians, 1,152; and Germans, 1,025.

Tourist arrivals in January 2017 were 7-percent higher than those in the same month in 2016 with 158,701.

This year Boracay aims to accommodate 2 million tourists.

Local officials believe the target may be achieved with the 15 cruise ships lined up to dock this year and the landing of regional and international flights at the Kalibo International Airport and airbuses at the Caticlan Airport.

They are also pinning their hopes on international events and the aggressive promotion activities by the Department of Tourism, the provincial government and the local government of Malay. (PIA/PN)
