MANILA – Police are tracking down a Quezon City road rage suspect, who they learned is currently in Boracay Island.
Fredison Atienza is considered “armed and dangerous.” An immigration lookout bulletin order was issued against him.
Atienza, a high-stakes poker player, allegedly killed an information technology professional in Quezon City on Feb. 25.
The suspect flew to Boracay a day after and has remained there since, Senior Inspector Jess Baylon, chief of the Boracay Tourist Assistance Center, told Manila-based AM radio dzBB on Thursday.
“Sa ating information ay paikot-ikot lang siya (Atienza) dito at parati naman daw siya rito kahit before pa,” Baylon said. “Nandito siya sa Boracay since Sunday at dapat kahapon (Wednesday) ang balik niya diyan pero hindi natuloy.”
A high-stakes poker player, Atienza allegedly shot Anthony Mendoza after an altercation at the intersection of Quezon and D. Tuazon avenues.
The victim’s brother Michael, who was just behind them, witnessed the incident.
He identified a Toyota Land Cruiser that a friend of Atienza surrendered to the Criminal Investigation and Detection Unit on Tuesday as the same vehicle the suspect was driving at the time of the shooting.
Atienza has remained in Boracay despite earlier information that he was returning to Manila on Wednesday, Quezon City Police District director Chief Superintendent Guillermo Eleazar said on Thursday.
“Tayo ay naniniwalang nandoon pa si (Atienza) sa Boracay, at nakikipag-ugnayan na tayo sa [pulis] doon,” he said. “We consider him armed and dangerous due to his two firearms, including iyong ginamit niya doon sa pagpatay sa victim.”
Eleazar added: “Ang balik sana niyang flight ay (Wednesday), pero hindi siya bumalik kaya ang paniwala natin ay nandoon pa siya. Mukhang wala siyang balak sumuko kaya sinusundan natin siya.”
‘WATCH OUT’
Justice secretary Vitaliano Aguirre ordered Immigration commissioner Jaime Morente to instruct all Immigration officers at the country’s airports and seaports to be on the lookout for Atienza.
Aguirre wanted an immigration lookout bulletin order issued against Atienza.
Immigration officers must “promptly relay to the Office of the (Justice) Secretary” information “should [Atienza] pass through Immigration counters in any of our international airports and seaports,” Aguirre said in a memo.
An immigration lookout bulletin order is different from a court-issued hold departure order.
The former directs the Immigration bureau to be on the lookout for the subject and verify the status of a case against them, but not restrict them from leaving the country.
But someone subject to the lookout order should seek an allow departure order from the Justice secretary to be allowed to leave. (With a report from Philippine News Agency/PN)
