MANILA – In opposing the death penalty, the opposition Liberal Party (LP) pushes for judicial reform to stamp out all forms of criminality.

“We commit to modernizing our judiciary to ensure the certainty of punishment as the response to lawlessness and disregard for the rule of law,” LP president Sen. Francis Pangilinan said.

Pangilinan said they are proposing to fill up vacancies in the courts and prosecution service  to speed up the administration of justice.

“We propose to reduce to (a maximum) of 2 years instead of 6 years the average case life of court cases; and increase the conviction rate of criminal cases,” the senator said.

On Tuesday, the LP expressed their sadness over the passage of the death penalty bill on third and final reading in the House of Representatives.

The controversial bill seeking to impose the death penalty for illegal drugs-related cases captured 217 “yes” votes from the lawmakers.

Only 54 House members voted against the measure, and one abstained.

“It is unfortunate that most of the people’s representatives voted for a bill that is proven worldwide to not work in reducing crime, and that overwhelmingly victimizes the poor and powerless,” their statement read.

The LP, according to Pangilinan, is set to block the passage of the death penalty bill in the Senate.

“We maintain that death penalty is cruel, degrading, and inhuman. We commit to stopping the death penalty in the Senate,” he added.

LP senators include Pangilinan, Franklin Drilon, Bam Aquino, Leila de Lima, Ralph Recto, and adopted member Risa Hontiveros./PN
