MANILA – The Ceres-Negros Football Club did not disappoint its hometown fans as it scored a 5-0 win over Singapore’s Tampines Rovers in the 2017 AFC Cup group stage on Tuesday night at the Panaad Park and Stadium in Bacolod City.
Bienvenido Marañon fired two goals, while Iain Ramsay, Manuel Ott and Fernando Rodriguez added a conversion each for Ceres-Negros which bounced back from a 1-1 draw with Vietnam.
With the victory, the Bacolod City-based squad is currently at solo first place in Group G with four points, followed by the Tampines Rovers with three, Hanoi with two and Felda United with one point.
Ramsay opened the scoring for the Ceres Negros with his left foot hit from outside the box. The lead was quickly doubled as Marañon was left wide open after Tampines Rovers came out of the goal area.
The Tampines Rovers also had opportunities of their own late in the first half but failed to come up with a decent shot. Ceres-Negros closed out the first half with another hit by Ott from outside the box.
Ceres-Negros continued its rampage in the second half as Ramsay passed the ball to Marañon for a beautiful finish. The Negrenses ended the dominant win with a goal from newcomer Rodriguez from a pass by Jeffrey Christiaens.
“I think the crowd provided the special motivation for the players,” said Ceres Negros head coach Risto Vidakovic. “But like what I said if we play together we can get the result that we wanted.”
Ceres-Negros will hope for its second straight victory in the group stage when it faces the lowly Felda United of Malaysia at 7:30 p.m. on March 15 still at the Bacolod City venue.
Ceres-Negros needs to top their group for them to advance in the zonal semifinals and play against the Asia zone winner, with the winner moving up to the zonal finals./PN
