BACOLOD City – Vice Mayor El Cid Familiaran wants the Bacolod City Police Office (BCPO) to give more attention to peace and order at night.
Familiaran expressed alarm over reports of successive holdup incidents early this week.
Criminals prefer nighttime and the wee hours in the morning to obscure their identity, he said. “Daylight helps deter the crimes.”
The reported holdup incidents were also “alarming,” he stressed. “Any criminal act is alarming because we are aiming for a peaceful atmosphere, a peaceful community.”
Familiaran believes the massive antidrug campaign of the Philippine National Police has pushed drug dealers to holding up as their alternative “means of livelihood.”
All 10 police stations under the BCPO must look into this, he said.
Meanwhile the Sangguniang Panlungsod encouraged barangay captains and councilmembers and purok officers to organize and mobilize their respective peace and order-maintaining bodies dubbed “Bantay Purok.”
Bacolod City, as capital of Negros Occidental, must “maintain its identity as the leading city in terms of economy and progress,” the city council said in a resolution authored by Ricardo Tan.
“Prerequisite to progress and development is the maintenance of internal peace and order, from the highest level of government to the smallest barangay and purok within the city,” said the councilors.
Participation of barangays and puroks “is one of the most important ingredients in the maintenance of peace and order everywhere,” and Bantay Purok will be “the fastest vehicle toward the attainment of a peaceful and orderly community,” they said./PN
