Abattoir project to displace over 100 families

ROXAS City – An estimated 150 families in Barangay Dinginan here would be displaced by the upgrading of the city’s slaughterhouse. But the city government will not leave them helpless.

The affected families have three choices – get a financial assistance, relocate to the housing site in Barangay Tanza which the city government has prepared, or stay temporarily in the Barangay Dinginan lot of the Metro Roxas Water District, according to Melvin Galagate, Roxas City Communications Group head and public information officer.

Mayor Ronnie Dadivas and other city government officers had a dialogue with the families.

They also inspected the housing units in Barangay Tanza where the affected families can be relocated.

It is already equipped with electricity as well as water, thus, ready to be occupied, said Dadivas.

The current slaughterhouse is a category A abattoir. The city government wants a better one to secure a double A  (or AA) rating from the National Mean Inspection Service (NMIS).

An A classification means meat from the slaughterhouse can be transported within the city only while an AA classification means the meat from it can be transported outside the city.

An AAA classification, on the other hand, means the meat from the slaughterhouse is safe enough to be shipped abroad.

The NMIS, a specialized regulatory agency in the Department of Agriculture, is the country’s sole national controlling authority on all matters pertaining to meat inspection and hygiene./PN
