MANILA – Adamson University Pep Squad captured its first-ever title in the UAAP Season 80 Cheerdance Competition on Saturday night at the SM Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.
Showing off an 80s-themed performance with songs from VST and Company, Adamson finished with the best score of 663.50 points.
Adamson, which barged to the top three in the competition for the first time last year, topped the pyramid and the stunts criteria and placed second in dance.
“I still can’t believe we won,” said Adamson head coach Jam Lorenzo. “It is a surreal feeling, really.”
University of Santo Tomas Salinggawi Dance Troupe improved from its fourth place finish last year to a runner-up performance this year with 638.50 points, including a dominant performance in dance.
“It’s everybody’s ball game,” said Salinggawi head coach Mark Chaiwalla. “So we really did not expect for us to finish runner-up. I am already thankful that we ended the competition injury-free and this award is a bonus.”
University of the East Pep Squad, on the other hand, surprisingly made it to the top three while four-time defending champion National University Pep Squad finished fourth.
NU Pep Squad had another impressive showing but its scores were diminished by numerous errors – and failed to match UST’s five-peat record.
“Wake-up call siguro ito sa amin pero ayaw ko ring maapektuhan iyong mga players ko sa pangyayaring ito,” said NU head coach Ghicka Bernabe. “Magagaling ang players ko. We will bounce back.”
In the group stunts category, Far Eastern University Pep Squad captured the championship with Adamson Pep Squad and University of the Philippines taking the second and third places, respectively./PN
