BACOLOD City – Secretary-general Clarissa Singson-Dagatan of Karapatan-Negros warned of possible human rights abuses that law enforcers may perpetrate.

Singson-Dagatan fielded this yet another warning after President Rodrigo Duterte ordered to cancel all peace talks between the government and the National Democratic Front, the political arm of the Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP).

Earlier, Singson-Dagatan said Duterte’s cancellation of the peace negotiations revealed his “true tyrannical color.”

According to her, the President made the situation “worse” when he labeled militant organizations under the Bagong Alyansang Makabayan (Bayan) as legal fronts of the CPP.

Leaders of the progressive groups had been harassed and intimidated – if not killed – by members of the Armed Forces of the Philippines, said Singson-Dagatan.

She added that these were done with the “go signal” from Duterte.

“The labeling of Bayan and its allied organization as CPP legal fronts and the tagging of New People’s Army (NPA) as a terrorist organization is endangering the lives of unarmed civilians,” Singson-Dagatn stressed./PN
