BACOLOD City – Antidrug agencies are helping local government units (LGUs) in the rehabilitation of drug dependents.
The Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency will allocate funds for LGUs who will establish rehabilitation centers, said Vice Mayor El Cid Familiaran.
The Dangerous Drugs Board (DDB), on the other hand, promised a P20-million funding support if the city government takes over the operation of the drug rehabilitation center in Paglaum Village, Councilor Em Ang said.
Around 90.8 percent of the 1,213 barangays in Negros Island Region were affected by illegal drugs, Familiaran said.
The president of the Vice Mayors’ League of the Philippines – Negros Island Region chapter was at the Regional Peace and Order Council meeting in Dumaguete City, Negros Oriental on Monday as Bacolod City’s representative.
As of Oct. 15, more than 22,000 alleged drug users and/or pushers in the region have surrendered to the authorities due to Oplan Double Barrel, the police’s intensified antidrug campaign that started on July 1, he said.
According to Ang, the DDB made its commitment to Rep. Greg Gasataya.
The drug rehabilitation facility here was being run by the REACH Foundation.
Ang said the Sangguniang Panlungsod passed a resolution asking Gasataya and Mayor Evelio Leonardia to study the possibility of taking over the center.
The REACH Foundation-run center was the first DDB-accredited facility in the region, the city council said.
It caters primarily to drug dependents mostly from Bacolod who belong to low-income families and cannot afford treatment in private institutions./PN
