Agri damage from ‘Usman’ now at P431M

MANILA – The Department of Agriculture (DA) has placed agriculture damages and losses brought about by Tropical Depression Usman at P431.21 million as of noon Wednesday.

For palay, some P366.07-million damage or 6,525 metric tons (MT) volume production loss was recorded.

Around 21,441 hectares of farmlands and 13,127 palay farmers in the provinces of Quezon, Oriental Mindoro, Albay, Camarines Sur, Camarines Norte, Catanduanes, Masbate, Sorsogon and Samar were affected.

Meanwhile, there was an increase in damage to corn crops which has now reach P23 million or 286MT volume production loss.

Some 4,255 hectares of farmland planted to corn and 2,779 farmers in Albay, Camarines Sur, Masbate, and Sorsogon provinces were affected.

For high-value crops, the DA said around P39.32 million of fruit trees, assorted vegetables, and root crops were damaged with 2,585 MT volume production loss.

Affected areas were 529 hectares and 1,693 farmers in the areas of Albay, Camarines Sur, Masbate, and Sorsogon.

The DA also recorded losses in livestock and fisheries sector.

For livestock, some P2.01 million worth of carabao, cattle, chicken, goat, duck, and swine were lost with two farmers affected in the provinces of Camarines Sur and Catanduanes.

On the other hand, a total of P807,500 worth of tilapia, crab, shrimp, bangus and fish corals were lost with 72 fisherfolk affected in Camarines Norte province. (PNA)
