KALIBO, Aklan – There are 991 bullying incidents in public and private elementary and secondary schools in Aklan from 2016 to 2017, the Department on Education (DepEd) reported.
Bullying incidents in elementary schools were higher with 888 cases compared to high schools with 103 cases, the DepEd report showed.
DepEd recorded 649 boys and 342 girls who experienced being bullied during the period.
This is despite a zero tolerance policy against child abuse and exploitation in schools in the province.
Among the bullying incidents, 608 involved physical abuses, 352 social abuses and 22 gender-based abuses.
There were also four cases of cyberbullying among students in Aklan, and five cases of retaliation, according to DepEd.
Private kindergartens in Aklan posted no bullying incidents.
Republic Act (RA) 10627, or the Anti-Bullying Act of 2013, defines bullying as “any severe or repeated use by one or more students of a written, verbal or electronic expression, or a physical act or gesture, or any combination thereof, directed at another student that has the effect of actually causing or placing the latter in reasonable fear of physical or emotional harm or damage to his property; creating a hostile environment at school for the other student; infringing on the rights of the other student at school; or materially and substantially disrupting the education process or the orderly operation of a school.”
RA 10627 mandates all elementary and secondary schools to adopt policies addressing bullying in their respective institutions. (With a report from Aklan Forum Journal/PN)
