KALIBO, Aklan – Local authorities on Monday destroyed hundreds of assorted open-pipe motorcycle mufflers.

The local government’s traffic management unit used a backhoe.

Mayor William S. Lachica said the mufflers were confiscated in various operations over the past months.

He stressed that the municipality will continue fighting the use of open-pipe mufflers, which are used to replace original mufflers to amplify engine noise at full throttle, something that irritates many locals.

The confiscation of illegal mufflers is in accordance with Municipal Ordinance No. 2016-003.

Erring drivers were fined P2,500 and required to reinstall the factory-manufactured and -installed mufflers.

The ordinance also prohibits selling modified mufflers.

Violators will be fined P1,500 on first offense and P2,500 on second offense. A P2,500 fine and the cancellation of business permit are imposed on third and succeeding offenses.

The Land Transportation Office – Aklan said they are also conducting crackdown operations in other towns.

Using improvised mufflers violates Republic Act 4136, or the Land Transportation and Traffic Code of the Philippines, said Law Enforcement Service chief Raul Ruan.

Illegal modifications of motorcycle parts may endanger lives, Ruan warned. (PNA)
