GUIMARAS – The Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office released P14 million to peoples’ organizations to fund the Enhanced National Greening Program, or e-NGP.
The amount represents the 15-percent “mobilization fund” intended for the establishment of 700 hectares of plantation, stated a news release from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Region 6’s Public Relations Office.
Of the 700 hectares, 500 will be for bamboo production, 150 for mangroves and 50 for agroforestry.
Checks were released after the Guimaras Alliance for Protected Areas and Sanctuaries signed a memorandum of agreement.
Participation from the private sector, peoples’ organizations and local governments should always be encouraged to further develop forest plantations, including forest parks, said DENR regional director Jim Sampulna.
“With our concerted efforts, we can achieve our goal of restoring our forest areas by 2028 to mitigate the effects of climate change,” Sampulna said.
Starting in 2011, the NGP is a massive forest rehabilitation program that aimed to grow 1.5 billion trees by 2016.
Executive Order No. 193 series of 2015 — “Expanding the Coverage of the National Greening Program” — extended the period of implementation to 2028 to cover the remaining 7.1 million hectares of unproductive, denuded and degraded areas. (PIA/PN)
