KALIBO, Aklan – Locals once again remembered the man that initiated the separation of Aklan from Capiz.
Aklanons celebrated the 105th birth anniversary of Godofredo Peralta Ramos, the “father of Aklan,” on Tuesday.
Ma. Anita Victoria Ramos-Antonino, his youngest daughter, led the thanksgiving mass at Saint John the Baptist Cathedral and the wreath-laying at Ramos’ monument in front of the capitol building.
Ramos was the congressman who authored the bill that then President Ramon Magsaysay signed into law as Republic Act 1414 on April 25, 1956. The law recognized Aklan as a distinct province.
He also served as Court of Appeals justice, Aklan governor and delegate to the Constitutional Convention.
Aklan’s illustrious son may be best honored for his political achievements, but Ramos-Antonino said they remember Ramos mostly as a “loving, responsible, disciplinarian” father and a “down-to-earth, humble and simple man.”
“He was the rock and pillar of our family,” said Ramos-Antonino.
An essay-writing contest and a lecture on the life and work of Ramos were organized by the Archbishop Gabriel M. Reyes Memorial Foundation, Inc. in collaboration with the provincial and municipal government, Aklan Historical Society, and the Godofredo P. Ramos Memorial Foundation, Inc.
Vice Gov. Reynaldo Quimpo, Mayor William Lachica, Vice Mayor Madeline Regalado, former mayor Johnny Dayang, and Sangguniang Panlalawigan members Harry Sucgang, Emmanuel Soviet Russia Dela Cruz and Immanuel Sodusta graced the event.
Ramos-Antonino thanked them for helping remember their father in a “simple yet meaningful way.”
Nov. 8 was a special nonworking day across Aklan and Boracay Island by virtue of Proclamation No. 194.
Ramos was born on Nov. 8, 1911 and retired from government service on Nov. 8, 1976. He died on July 17, 1977. (Aklan Forum Journal/PN)
