AKLAN — The Provincial Government of Aklan has strengthened its disaster preparedness efforts through a five-day training on the Rapid Earthquake Damage Assessment System (REDAS) conducted by Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology.
The training, organized by the Department of Science and Technology-PHIVOLCS, served as the province’s first REDAS refresher course since 2013.
Disaster Risk Reduction and Management (DRRM) personnel from the province and its municipalities were trained on how to use the REDAS software to improve disaster planning, identify hazard-prone areas, and enhance emergency response operations.
REDAS, or Rapid Earthquake Damage Assessment System, is a software tool designed to assess hazards and estimate the possible impact of natural disasters.
During the training, participants learned how to use real-time hazard monitoring and simulation tools capable of analyzing risks from earthquakes, liquefaction, landslides, and tsunamis.
The software can also estimate potential damage to infrastructure, the number of casualties, and economic losses that may result from a major disaster.
