MANILA – Alab Pilipinas bucked the distraction of losing its sponsor Tanduay as it scored 95-87 over Saigon Heat in the ASEAN Basketball League at the CIS Arena in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam.
Renaldo Balkman led with 26 points, 20 rebounds, six assists, and four steals while Justin Brownlee added 25 points and 15 boards for Alab to extend its winning run to three (6-4).
Tanduay parted ways with Alab last week after head coach Jimmy Alapag refused to include PBA free agent Joseph Yeo in the lineup. Alab is now in talks with the Manny Pangilinan group for possible sponsorship.
Heat surged early in the Sunday night match 15-9 on conversions by Akeem Scott. Alab responded with 3 straight inside hits from Brownlee to come to within 20-21 at the end of the opening quarter.
They exchanged leads at the onset of the second before Alab tasted a 32-30 lead on a dunk by Rico Maierhofer. But Heat came up with a run to surge 47-42 at the half.
Alab went on a strong start in the third for a 64-54 lead on baskets from Brownlee and Balkman. Heat answered with baskets from Maxie Esho to come to within 63-70.
Heat tried to keep the game close in the fourth, cut the deficit to 2 points several times, before Alab came up with a finishing run from Brownlee, Balkman and Joshua Urbiztondo for 89-83.
Moses Morgan finished with 26 points – 21 coming in the first half – while Scott and Esho added 26 and 23 points, respectively, for Heat (4-5)./PN
