MANILA – Sen. Alan Peter Cayetano has taken offense to online media Rappler’s post depicting him, Justice secretary Vitaliano Aguirre and dancer/blogger/recent Movie and Television Review and Classification Board appointee Mocha Uson as dogs in an image shared on Chinese New Year.
Cayetano, Aguirre, and Uson are known supporters of President Rodrigo Duterte.
“Does supporting and believing in the Duterte administration make us dogs or tuta? Does anything in my 24 years of service in government point to that? Haven’t I stood up even at the risk of my life, when the country needed me to stand up and lend my voice,” he said.
In Rappler’s controversial post, the three were compared to dogs.
“Those born on the ‘Year of the Dog’ are said to be faithful and loyal. They’re also intenseful defensive with friends and family,” the same post said.
Cayetano, the vice presidential running mate of Duterte in the May 2016 election, also questioned the news organization’s motive and their lack of objectivity in portraying them as dogs.
“This meme speaks a thousand words about Rappler, the person who authored it and your editors. First of all, why the meme? Have you done that for past politicians, especially those you like and favor,” the lawmaker added.
While the post was deleted immediately after it was published, Cayetano said Rappler did not directly apologize to Aguirre and Uson.
“Yet you posted a simple apology not even directed to secretary Aguirre nor to Mocha (never mind me, I’m used to being a whipping boy anyway),” he said.
“I assume you are apologizing for your actions not just for getting caught. So, since it is Chinese New Year and since the Bible says forgive 7 times 77, I forgive you.”
On Twitter, Rappler apologized for its “Chinese New Year image.”
The same post, they explained, was “not approved for posting.”/PN
