MANILA – Eight construction workers from Cebu were fetched at the Dumangas Port in Iloilo on Monday, the Philippine Coast Guard said yesterday.

They were promised jobs in Iloilo City by a certain “engineer Edward Alferez,” but the latter abandoned them when they reached the port on Friday, Jan. 27, said Coast Guard spokesperson Armand Balilo.

Citing reports from the Coast Guard station in Iloilo and the substation in Dumangas town, Balilo said the workers have been loitering at the port since Friday and were famished when fetched.

The workers were identified as Alejandro Lariosa, 29; Adelbert Sabanico, 26; Brucelen Cabillo, 23; Russel Badayos, 26; Rolando Badayos, 41; Richard Badayos, 35; Peter Alfante, 35; and Guadioso Villasencio, 29, all from Minglanilla, Cebu.

“The [Coast Guard] Iloilo received a report that there were construction workers from Cebu loitering at the Dumangas Port and who have not eaten for four days,” Balilo said.

Upon receiving the report, the Coast Guard-Iloilo took the workers and referred them to the Department of Social Welfare and Development Region 6, which sent them back to Cebu province./PN
