ILOILO City – Two sisters in Barangay Dao, Alimodian, Iloilo drank pesticides. Only one of them survived.
The 30-year-old Ritchel Anibani died while sister Miraflor Alibocboc, 39, was confined in the Aleosan District Hospital.
Alibocboc tried to kill herself by drinking pesticide when she learned that Anibani did the same and died, fearing that she will be blamed for her sister’s death, Alimodian police head Inspector Danilo Noca said, citing investigation.
On Saturday evening the sisters and their cousins had a drinking spree in a relative’s house in the same village.
At around 12:30 a.m. on Sunday, Anibani told Alibocboc to stop as she was already unruly but the latter refused.
Anibani then left the house, went to a nipa hut at their farm, and drank pesticide mixed with water, said the police.
An hour later their brother-in-law found Anibani’s body and informed the cousins. When she learned about this, Alibocboc also drank pesticide but her cousins immediately found her and brought her to the hospital.
“Alibocboc was afraid she would be blamed for her sister committing suicide,” said Noca. “Luckily, she survived.”
Noca said they learned that Anibani was saying goodbye to family and relatives prior to the incident. She also told a sister working in Manila via text message to take care of her children./PN
