MANILA – Will Alyssa Valdez’s name be on the list when the national women’s volleyball team training pool is announced today at the Golden Phoenix Hotel in Pasay City?
A source told Panay News that the former Ateneo Lady Eagles star could land a spot in the national team pool since head coach Francis Vicente has decided to extend the roster to at least 25 instead of 16.
Various reports surfaced earlier that the three-time UAAP MVP awardee could be among those cut from the training pool as there were other volleyball players who impressed Vicente more during the four-day tryouts.
“Coach Francis has decided to extend the number of his training pool to at least 25 since it will be unfair to just single out 16 players from those who have tried out,” said the source.
“It is also the right opportunity for them to really show what they got and that they belong to be part of the 12-woman lineup since one tryout is not enough to exhibit what you can do for the team,” he added.
Larong Volleyball ng Pilipinas Inc. (LVPI) president Joey Romasanta and Acting president Peter Cayco are tasked to announce the members of the pool during the Philippine Sportswriters Association (PSA) Forum today.
Aside from Valdez, other notable players that tried out are Guimaras-native Jovelyn Gonzaga, Honey Royce Tubino, Rachel Anne Daquis, Dindin Santiago-Manabat, Myla Pablo, Elaine Kasilag, Kim Fajardo, Denise Lazaro, Abigail Maraño, and Ara Galang.
Others who have tried their luck are UAAP and NCAA players Cherry Rondina, Ennajie Laure, Shaya Adorador, Kath Arado, Gretchel Soltones, Lourdes Clemente, Marivic Meneses, and Jaja Santiago.
Vicente is forming a national team that will be sent to the Asian Under-23 Championship, Asian Women’s Seniors Championship, and the Southeast Asian Games./PN
