
MANILA – San Beda University Lady Red Spikers prevailed over Lyceum of the Philippines Lady Pirates, 25-14, 22-25, 21-25, 25-13, 16-14, in the NCAA Season 100 women’s volleyball tournament at the Filoil EcoOil Centre in San Juan City.
Negrense Reyann Cañete finished with 17 points, built on 15 attacks and two blocks, to go with seven excellent receptions as the Lady Red Spikers notched their second win for a 2-12 win-loss slate.
Janelle Bachar led the way for the Lady Red Spikers with 22 points, coming from 19 attacks, two service aces, and a block, while Angel Habacon had a double-double of 15 points and 13 excellent digs.
The Lady Red Spikers capitalized on the Lady Pirates’ miscues in the fifth set, especially a back-to-back attack errors from Johna Dolorito, to establish a slim 10-7 lead.
The Lady Pirates managed to cut the deficit to 10-11 but more errors from Joann De Guzman and Ashley Muchillas allowed the Lady Red Spikers to take a 13-10 lead, but Lyceum made their last run to tie the count at 14-all.
Habacon surged the Lady Red Spikers to match point at 15-14 after the Lady Pirates failed to receive her free ball before Cañete sealed the victory with a down-the-line hammer.
Negrense Joan Doguna, who didn’t see action in the final set, still top-scored for the Lady Pirates with 15 points while middle blocker Hiromi Osada chipped in 13 markers. They dropped to a 6-8 record.
Meanwhile, Emilio Aguinaldo College Lady Generals (4-10) triumphed over Jose Rizal University Lady Bombers (1-13), 25-11, 27-25, 17-25, 25-27, 15-11. Ilongga Elisha Alimen tallied 27 points for the Player of the Game honors./PN
