ILOILO – “One by one they fall.” This was how Provincial Administrator Raul Banias described the latest arrest effected by the Iloilo Provincial Bantay Dagat Task Force in the quest to free the seas of illegal fishing.
Led by Police Officer 3 Philip Cañoso, the task force arrested 27 crew members of FB Inday Apple recently for unauthorized fishing and violation of the nationwide ban on Danish seine fishing or hulbot-hulbot.
The fishing boat’s captain Julie Guban and its owner Leo de los Santos all were residents of Carles town. They were charged with violation of Section 86 of Republic Act 10654 (Fisheries Code) and Fisheries Administrative Order No. 246, in relation to Section 97 of RA 10654.
An inquest investigation was conducted last week and the charges were docketed as I.S. No. VI-II-INQ-17H-654 and I.S. No. VI-II-INQ-17H-00659, respectively.
Cañoso said the boat captain was detained at the Carles municipal police station while the owner or operator remained at-large.
FB Inday Apple was intercepted engaging in Danish seine fishing about 5:30 a.m. on Aug. 4 off Balbagon Island, Carles.
The task force recovered from their possession the following:
* fishing boat (wooden hull) with outrigger equipped with one engine, 6D14 Mitsubushi, shafting, propeller and rudder
* mechanical winch drive
* a set Danish seine fishing net with floats and sinkers
* two rolls scaring lines
* a tom weight (1.2 tons)
* 135 tubs of assorted fishes
* diesel fuels
* kitchen wares
* food.
Banias said the task force has a clear mission and that is to get rid of all forms of illegal fishing at all cost and he urged the public to cooperate in achieving this objective.
Gov. Arthur Defensor Sr. commended the task force and pledged to continue to provide support to beef-up its logistics so they will have the capacity to go after big-time illegal fishing operators. (Jezza A. Nepomoceno, Iloilo Capitol/PN)
