MANILA – After returning to the league during the 2016 season, three-time champion RC Cola-Army Lady Troopers will once again be sidelined in the Philippine Superliga next year.
Lady Troopers star Jovelyn Gonzaga said her team will not compete in the 2017 season since most of its players will undergo the Candidate Soldiers Course, a six-to-eight-month training regimen for Philippine Army members.
“Wala kami next season,” said the Guimaras-native Gonzaga. “Karamihan sa amin will undergo Candidate Soldiers Course. Mga six to eight months ‘yun kaya wala kami next conference.”
Lady Troopers head coach Emilio Reyes, for his part, said his team might even be out for a longer period as they have to start from scratch in terms of forming a championship-caliber team.
“Malamang talagang sit out kami, sabi nga kung mag-tutuloy kami, kuha kami ng sibilyan ganun din e, wala din kaming tao na ibibigay na matibay, so talagang pahinga muna this year,” Reyes said.
Gonzaga seconded Reyes saying that she and her teammates Genie Sabas, Honey Royse Tubino, Christina Agno and Nerissa Bautista might be out of volleyball shape at the end of their Candidate Soldiers Course.
“Hindi rin namin sigurado after the Candidate Soldiers Course kasi we will be out of volleyball for almost half a year. After the training, we will start from scratch again,” Gonzaga said.
The Lady Troopers holds the record of most number of championships in the league with three crowns./PN
