CAPIZ — The Palina River Cruise in Roxas City has earned regional recognition after being named a recipient of the ASEAN Sustainable Tourism Award (Urban Category), highlighting its success as a model for eco-friendly and community-based tourism.
Known for its crystal-clear waters, expansive mangrove ecosystems, and showcase of local Capisnon cuisine, the Palina River Cruise has become one of Roxas City’s flagship tourism destinations.
In a statement, Mayor Ronnie Dadivas congratulated the Palina River Development Association Inc. and the Roxas City government for the achievement, citing their collective efforts in transforming the once-silted river into a thriving tourism and livelihood hub.
“Congratulations, Palina,” Dadivas said, acknowledging the dedication behind the project’s long-term rehabilitation and development.
Originally a degraded waterway, the Palina River underwent gradual restoration over the years, eventually emerging as a sustainable tourism site that highlights the natural beauty and cultural heritage of Roxas City and the wider Capiz province.
The initiative is formally known as “The Palina River Cruise: A Journey Through Nature, Livelihood and Community,” reflecting its emphasis on environmental protection, local livelihoods, and community participation.
A key component of the project is the Palina Greenbelt Ecopark, which has been designated a mangrove reservation area since the early 2000s. The ecopark was established following the removal of illegal structures that proliferated in the area during the 1990s.
The rehabilitation effort gained momentum under the administration of former mayor Angel Celino, when funds were allocated for river restoration and extensive mangrove planting. Subsequent development phases introduced infrastructure such as floating restaurants, allowing visitors to enjoy local seafood while cruising along the river.
Capiz is widely known as the “Seafood Capital of the Philippines,” and the river cruise offers tourists a culinary experience amid lush mangroves and tranquil surroundings.
The Department of Tourism (DOT) later provided funding and technical support to further improve and expand the project. According to local officials, this assistance helped generate employment, strengthen community participation, and promote environmental stewardship among residents.
Over time, the Palina River Cruise gained national recognition as a successful example of sustainable community tourism that balances economic development with ecological protection.
The Capiz Provincial Tourism and Cultural Affairs Office has also played a key role in promoting the destination, working closely with the city government to position Palina as a benchmark for responsible tourism.
Through sustained partnerships and community involvement, the Palina River Cruise continues to thrive as a symbol of sustainability, local culture, and inclusive development, ensuring that the river remains a source of livelihood and pride for Roxas City./PN
