MANILA – The Ateneo Lady Eagles got back on the winning track in the UAAP Season 79 women’s volleyball tournament with a 25-19, 24-26, 19-25, 25-16, 15-11 win over the Far Eastern University Lady Tamaraws on Sunday night at the San Juan Arena.
Jhoana Maraguinot led the way with 18 points, on 16 attacks and two service aces, for the Lady Eagles, which moved up to solo third place in the standings with a 2-1 win-loss slate.
Michelle Morente added 17 markers, while Bea de Leon and Maddy Madayag had 11 and 10 points, respectively, for the Lady Eagles, which bounced back from a 25-17, 25-13, 19-25, 29-27 loss to the National University Lady Bulldogs.
After splitting the first four sets, the Lady Eagles opened the deciding frame with a 5-3 lead on an ace by Negrense Kassandra Gequillana and back-to-back hits by Maraguinot.
Errors from the service line by the Lady Tamaraws allowed the Lady Eagles to widen the lead to 9-4, but the Lady Tamaraws quickly responded to come to within 10-9 on a Mary Remy Palma ace.
Back-to-back hits from Morente and Madayag gave the Lady Eagles a 13-11 lead. After another error committed by the Lady Tamaraws, Gequillana clinched the win for the Lady Eagles with a service ace.
Negrense Bernadeth Pons top-scored with 18 points, while Toni Rose Basas and Jerrilli Malabanan had 15 and 13 points, respectively, for the Lady Tamaraws, which slid down to 1-2.
In men’s action, reigning MVP Marck Espejo and Karl Baysa combined 22 points as the Ateneo Blue Eagles defeated the FEU Tamaraws, 25-18, 25-15, 25-19, to extend its perfect run to three games.
The National University Bulldogs, meanwhile, improved to a 2-1 win-loss slate following its 24-26, 25-17, 25-23, 28-26 victory over the Adamson University Falcons, which remains winless after three games./PN
